PSAT Overview & National Merit

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) serves two purposes: it gives 10th and 11th graders practice for the SAT, and — critically — it determines eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program, one of the most recognized academic honors in the US.

The National Merit path works as follows: top scorers on the PSAT become Commended Scholars (top ~2%), then Semifinalists (top ~1% per state), then Finalists, and ultimately Scholarship winners. Being a National Merit Finalist is a significant college application advantage and can earn scholarship awards from colleges and corporate sponsors.

Key date: The PSAT is administered each October at your high school. The 2025 PSAT (qualifying for National Merit 2026 program) was held in October 2025. Junior year (11th grade) is the only year that counts for National Merit eligibility.

Selection Index & Cutoffs

The PSAT is scored on a 320–1520 scale (Reading/Writing + Math). For National Merit, the Selection Index is calculated as:

Selection Index = 2 × (ERW score ÷ 10) + 2 × (Math score ÷ 10)
Range: 48–228

Cutoffs vary significantly by state. High-competition states (Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC) typically have the highest cutoffs:

Massachusetts
~222
New Jersey
~221
Maryland
~220
Texas
~218
California
~220
Lower-comp. states
~209–213

Note: These are approximate based on historical data. Actual cutoffs are released each year by the College Board after the exam.

PSAT Math Format

The digital PSAT uses the same adaptive format as the Digital SAT:

ModuleQuestionsTimeCalculator?
Math Module 122 questions35 minYes (full)
Math Module 2 (adaptive)22 questions35 minYes (full)

The Math section is 44 questions total: approximately 75% multiple choice, 25% student-produced responses (grid-in). Graphing calculator (TI-84, Desmos) is permitted for all questions.

Highest-Yield Math Topics

The PSAT Math section emphasizes algebra and data analysis above all else:

DomainWeightKey Topics
Algebra~35%Linear equations, systems, inequalities, linear functions
Advanced Math~35%Quadratics, polynomials, exponential functions, function notation
Problem-Solving & Data~15%Ratios, percentages, statistics, data interpretation
Geometry & Trig~15%Area, volume, coordinate geometry, basic trig
Where points are made and lost: Most students struggle with the Advanced Math domain — especially recognizing when to use the quadratic formula vs. factoring vs. completing the square, and interpreting nonlinear function transformations. Mastering these is the fastest path to score improvement.

Exam Strategy

Prep Plan

Ideal timeline: Start PSAT prep in June before your junior year. This gives 4+ months before the October exam.
