The Two Courses at a Glance

Since the 2019 IB curriculum reform, there are two mathematics courses: Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI). Both are available at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

Math AA — Analysis & Approaches

  • Pure mathematics focus
  • Algebraic thinking and proof
  • Calculus is central
  • No GDC on Paper 1
  • Closer to A-Level / traditional university maths

Math AI — Applications & Interpretation

  • Applied mathematics focus
  • Modelling, statistics, and technology
  • Calculator permitted on all papers
  • Emphasis on real-world contexts
  • Closer to data science / social science maths

University Requirements

This is the most important factor for most students:

Check your target university requirements before choosing. Many STEM and economics programmes explicitly require AA HL, not AI HL. AI HL is increasingly accepted but is still not universally equivalent to AA HL in admissions.
Field of StudyRecommended Course
Mathematics, Physics, EngineeringAA HL required or strongly preferred
Computer Science, Electrical EngineeringAA HL strongly preferred
Economics, Business (top universities)AA HL preferred (Oxford, LSE, Cambridge)
Medicine, Biology, ChemistryAA SL or AI SL acceptable at most unis
Psychology, Sociology, EducationAI SL or AI HL sufficient
Data Science, StatisticsAI HL increasingly preferred
Business (non-top), Marketing, HospitalityAI SL sufficient

Difficulty Comparison

Students and teachers broadly agree on the relative difficulty:

Grade 7 rates (approximate): AA HL typically has lower grade 7 rates (~20%) than AI HL (~30%), reflecting the higher difficulty of AA HL. However, top universities know this — a 7 in AA HL is often viewed more favourably than a 7 in AI HL for competitive programmes.

Making Your Decision

The most reliable decision process:

  1. Research your target universities first. Look up admissions requirements for your intended course at your top 3 universities.
  2. Consider your future options. AA HL opens more doors (you can always study applied mathematics later). AI HL closes some STEM doors permanently.
  3. Be honest about your current ability. AA HL requires strong algebraic foundation from GCSE / Year 10. If you struggled with quadratics, AA HL will be very challenging.
  4. Talk to your current mathematics teacher. They know your learning style and ability better than any guide.
