Course Overview

BC Pre-Calculus 12 (formerly called Principles of Mathematics 12) is the highest-level Grade 12 mathematics course in the British Columbia curriculum. It is the standard prerequisite for first-year calculus at BC universities (UBC, SFU, UVIC, UVic, etc.) and is required for admission to engineering, mathematics, science, and economics programmes.

The course builds on Pre-Calculus 11 and covers topics that directly prepare students for university calculus. It is assessed through school-based exams and formerly through a BC provincial exam (the provincial exam requirement was modified in 2020 — check with your school for the current assessment structure).

University prerequisite: UBC Engineering and Science require Pre-Calculus 12 with a minimum 70% (or equivalent) for admission. Most BC university programmes require it as a prerequisite for MATH 100/110 (Calculus 1). UBC also offers a free Calculus Readiness Self-Test to help you gauge preparation.

Highest-Priority Areas

Trigonometry and Exponentials/Logarithms together account for roughly 40% of assessments and are also the most heavily tested topics in university Calculus 1. Students who are weak in these areas tend to struggle significantly in first-year calculus.

Calculus 12 vs Pre-Calculus 12: BC also offers Calculus 12 as an elective at some schools. This is not a prerequisite for university calculus, but students who complete it typically perform better in MATH 100/110. Pre-Calculus 12 remains the standard university admission prerequisite.

Preparation Resources

Best preparation for university calculus: After completing Pre-Calculus 12, work through the first chapter of a university calculus textbook (Stewart Calculus or similar) over the summer before starting university. Students who preview limits and differentiation before September typically score one full letter grade higher in MATH 100.
